And The Embryo Dreams Of Rainbows

1997

Lyrics & voiceCD

Evelyn was born a German prisoner of war in Norton, located close to Harare, in what is now Zimbabwe. As a child she ran free on a farm in Tanzania, and later travelled widely. She chose Canada as her multi-cultural base; however, her work often takes her “home” to Africa.

Evelyn finds it exhilarating to explore the combination of spoken poetry and performance soundscape. Her first series of these unique expressions was released in 1997 on the enigmatically titled disc “And the Embryo Dreams of Rainbows”. Her second, recently released, CD “Candles in the Sand” continues this exploration and adds visual imagery to the earlier combination of words and music. Evelyn collaborated with friend and producer, John Dooher, who writes and performs most of the eclectic music on her CDs. In keeping with their international and multicultural celebration of difference, they have performed as far afield as Canada, Zimbabwe, Romania and Kosovo.

In their words

Reader

It is as if the romantic English tradition of poetry collided with Allan Ginsberg ... mixed with the dream landscapes of East Africa, ... modern speech patterns, music, languages and the absurdity of daily life. At the same time there is a mad, playful element to it all - a kind of late twentieth century “songs of experience”. Blake would claim you if he were around and were a clubbish sort. ... There is a cabaret like aspect ... an echo of Weimar and Brecht and an aftertaste of theosophical speculation ... a dimension of female, semi science fictional poetry and art that is both futuristic and yet rooted in the present.
